Man Overboard from the Balitanic

Tenny Soriano finally squawks on Cusipag, calling it quits for good.
“I can take their lies and shallow excuses but not the insult.
“I felt that this was not only news management but censorship. This happened not only once or twice and I vigorously argued with the publisher to enlighten her on what opinion writing is all about. It seems she had other ideas or concept of journalism.”
Here’s the article (Soriano's letter) published in The Philippine Reporter, 22 March 2013.
http://philippinereporter.com/2013/03/22/soriano-charges-censorship

Is it a wise decision for Soriano to jump ship before the Balitanic hits the Iceberg of Public Opinion?

In the case of the Titanic, we know it was the iceberg which won!

Factual Report Triggers Howling Hysteria in Balita Camp amidst Media Tempest in Toronto

When I filed my post-PPCO election report (reproduced below) little did I expect that the defeated team of Mogado and Cusipag would promptly and fiercely dispute the undeniable implication of their loss.

From their pre-election speeches Mogado and Cusipag embraced the platform that if they won they would keep the PPCO as a social club, implying that they were for the non-implementation of  PPCO’s Constitution and By-laws and Code of Ethics.

The majority of PPCO members, however, rejected the Mogado-Cusipag platform. This was a clear affirmation by those who elected the opposing team that PPCO should function as currently provided in their Constitution - a self-regulating professional organization governed by a set of rules and a code of ethics. That to me is clear as day. Let’s verify again if there is any falsehood in my report (in italics below):

Subject: Candidates' Speeches during PPCO's Special Election on March 3, 2013

Greetings

These are the campaign speeches during Sunday's (March 3, 2013) special election by Philippine Press Club Ontario. Four candidates vied for positions: Hermie Garcia and Mogi Mogado for president; Rose Tijam and Tess Cusipag for vice-president.

This news video is from The Filipino Web Channel

Garcia and Tijam won by a margin of 17 to 13, and 18 to 12, over Mogado and Cusipag, respectively. Their victory affirms that PPCO is a self-regulating association governed by a Constitution & By-laws and a Code of Ethics for journalists, a platform opposed by the Mogado-Cusipag team who contended that PPCO is merely a social club.

ConGen Junever Mahilum-West inducted the winners shortly after the results. She congratulated all the candidates and the PPCO officials for the efficient and transparent voting and expressed the hope that with the new leadership, PPCO is now poised to achieve even greater unity and strength.

Shortly after I filed my report, a deluge of insulting and pugilistic emails came my way, as if I stirred a hungry pack of wolves that was out for the kill.

In the frozen tundra of the north, scientists tell us that the wolf pack starts off with the scent of a prey sniffed by one of the scout dogs.  His find is promptly relayed to the alpha female, who, with a distinct howl, signals the alpha male to round up the pack for the attack.  Cunning and ferocious, the alpha female may often be seen focusing her sights on weaker prey when the pack’s foray fails.Read the email trail below and see if you can visualize a breath-robbing chase by a hungry wolf pack as it tries to hunt down another prospective prey which they thought is easy game, after a series of failed excursions.

THE HUNT …. (read the conclusion at the end)

The only once that I know that they were able to retain is the singing group where they are the bidas, gasbag sings solo, his wife plays the piano and tarsee conducts.Thats it and so they are trying to be known some other ways

i am not worried.......they just want to harass and  I know how to fight, in and out of the courtroom.

Crazy as it is, this guy is laying the foundation for another shaky argument, one he would perhaps advance in pursuit of their lies. Can he please stop now?

= = =  = = THE WOLF PACK PAUSES TO CATCH ITS BREATH = = = = = = =

Ask yourself …

Will the Fil-Can community in Toronto continue to allow itself to be picked-off one-by-one by this wolf pack just because we will no longer stand for their kind of journalism?

How can we expect fairness and objectivity from these people when they immerse themselves in self-denial and indulge in haranguing behavior rather than accept the truth of the election loss of Mogado and Cusipag and engage in an intelligent discourse?

The simple answer is that, like the wolf pack in the frozen tundra, they think they can run down anyone in the Fil-Can community as easy prey!

If you think that the terror tactics of this wolf pack must be stopped to restore civility in our community - go to the online petition calling for ethical and socially responsible journalism and make your voice heard along with the many who have already said "enough of unbridled media bullying"!

Transcript of the election campaign speech given by TESSIE CUSIPAG,  Editor/Publisher of Balita, who ran for vice-president of PPCO:
I am one of the founders of this group and I have been with you for a long long time now since we founded the organization and I am very open and I'm very honest and I do not quarrel with anyone - not unless I'm provoke. I become a tiger and I become a wild dog when I'm provoke and, but luckily none of us have ever ever did that - none of you have ever did that to me.

And, I'd like to say that, we should also always remember that we are not all journalists. I myself, I am not a journalist and I never claim to be a journalist. I write but I am not a journalist. And so I would like to take care of those people that are not writing here. We have all kinds - we have photographers we have, contributors we have everything here. We just want to maintain the camaraderie that we had before - we never had any quarrels - there was no politics inside - it's just pure fun. And that's what we wanna keep. I am not saying I'll be very good at it. If you want to vote for me, if you don't wanna vote for me I'm still ok. I will  be here. Regardless. I will not - I don't have to hold a  position to serve. I am always here and you know me. Ok? Thank you.

Transcript of the election campaign speech given by MOGI MOGADO,  Associate Editor of Balita, who ran for president of PPCO:
Mga kasama, just to be a political sport, I want to tell you now that kung manalo si Ka Hermie, my good friend, Hermie, you can have my support.

I read his material last night and I could not believe what I was reading.

The big question is does Hermie care about PPCO? Does he ever know PPCO the way we are? I have other questions. Number 1:Does Hermie think that PPCO is just for journalists? Remember now in his speech -  he never mentioned anything about the others. What about our photographers? What about our other staff?

If I am president, I will give equal treatment, equal respect to all of us. Number 2: In his material you have noticed that he mentioned about other staff other than PPCO for example. I think he wants to transform PPCO towards social justice. I have no quarrel with the CASJ. But are you prepared to be an adjunct of CASJ? Number 3, in our discussions, what is good for PPCO. Ano ba ang gagawin natin para successful and ating organization na eto. And there was an informal agreement that we should not encourage publishers and owners of radios or whatever to be president because it means that PPCO will become an adjunct of publication. And we cannot allow that. It is ok. Hermie does not care about PPCO so long as makakuha siya ng mga trophy points. Ako? I don't have publication I don't have nothing to sell. I'll stop there before I get carried away. And I'm gonna give you my one hundred and one percent, not fifty percent but one hundred and one percent.

Transcript of the election campaign speech given by ROSE TIJAM who ran for vice-president of PPCO:
I am one of the founders of the Philippine Press Club and I have been there since day one. The Philippine Press Club is not just a social club as a lot of us understand it.  And we have been engaged in many political actions and information matters.

Social clubs have parties and social gatherings, PPCO have them, too, but we go beyond these. But we have a special mandate in the community journalism. The Philippine Press Club also covers not just journalists or writers but broadcasters, television people, admin staff, delivery, all publications included, printers and all those things.

I support the platform of my colleague, Hermie Garcia, and I will continue to provide serious leadership in PPCO and in the community.

I feel that we need to expand the education and information program of our organization and promote unity as well.

We should be familiar with our constitution and our bylaws and  code of ethics for journalists, and professionalism should be practiced as well.

I am for unity, for strength, for developing our organization and community as PPCO members and members of the community.

I always want to emphasize credibility,  respect and dignity in any organization or in any group. We are mature people, we are professionals. People look up to us. We have a reputation to protect, a reputation to maintain. This we have to be very careful about.

With that I know that many of you know that I am in touch with most of you because we meet in other community activities. We are going to exercise our fair judgment of each other, judgment of leadership and as well as in our role in the community.

People look up to us and we have that to look into and we have that to protect.

So with that I wish everyone good luck and all the very best for our organization.

Thank you.
